Happy New
Year from the Algarve
We are having some really nice weather here. In fact the new year is
off to a reasonably good start; blue skies, a bit windy at times, and
chilly at nights, but otherwise the weather is great considering it's
the middle of winter.
On the other hand, the concept of winter here is a bit different to
what you'd expect further north. In fact, one wonders whether there is
any winter in the Algarve. Autumn comes in at the end of October, and
is over by the first week in December. By then we have the jonquils in
bloom, and everything else is not far behind, so maybe spring starts
the second week in December.
I did give you a few christmas photos in a previous blog, but here are
some more I took on New Year's Day.
As you can see, the bottle brush bushes are in full bloom, and one of
my almond trees has come into blossom. I think it's spring.
We went over to the west coast on New Year's Day and ended up eating in
a restaurant that is new to me. We were right out on the edge of the
continent. It's called the Taberna do Gabriel II, and for once I liked
the cooking.
The restaurant is perched on a hilltop overlooking the estuary of a
small stream where it meets the sea just to the north of a hamlet
called Monte Clerigo. It's stuck right out on its own, but worth a
detour for the food. I'll try and feature it in a later blog.
