Stumbling Home in the Dark

The white moon
bends
to look through the trees
searching
for tomorrow.

The river opens a window
the light shines out
across the shadows.

There is a crash
as my neighbour
blinded by the light
stumbles home.

Written while sitting at night on the roof of an old ruin overlooking the Guadiana River

Two Spains 2011

The tourist
sits on a bench
staring at the moon
the dark sea
and
so many dreams

The builder
leans against the bar
gulps a beer
counts his last few coins
and
wonders where his dreams have gone
